Summer goes by too fast every year! Like it or not, it’s that time again to prepare to go back to school. This provides an opportunity to regroup, refocus, and realign ourselves. For some, this would be referred to as going back to basics.
Dictionary.com defines back-to-basics as “stressing simplicity and adherence to fundamental principles.” Dictionary.cambridge.org defines back to basics as “returning to the simple and most important things.”

“In Summer…” Ahhhh, Summer. It brings thoughts of watermelon, swimming pools, ice cream and fun. While each season encompases beauty and brings its own enjoyment, I have to admit that I love summer!! Being born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, I love the sun and the heat. Even though I moved away years ago, the summer heat brings back pleasant, carefree, childhood memories.
“The song sings itself.” People sing. Birds sing. Flutes sing. What song? What is it singing? What songs do you hear? Famous French flutist, Marcel Moyse, once said that the flute is an extension of the voice. If so, what song does your flute have to sing this summer?

So many things that used to be routine are now chaotic and unpredictable because of Covid-19. Fortunately, there are some things that remain constant and provide anchors of stability in my life amid the uncertainty that surrounds me. I’ve played principal flute with the Utah Valley Symphony for 16 years. This is a picture from one of our concerts last year. We started rehearsing yesterday for our 2018-19 season. I’m so excited. We have a lot of incredible music planned!
