End of Semester Thoughts

As this flute semester is drawing to a close, I’m pausing to reflect on my students’ development. I’m really pleased with how they have grown with tone, vibrato, dynamics, and rhythms, to name a few. Beyond their flute abilities, and perhaps even more important, is how they have grown in their confidence, their patience, and their dedication.

We finished our flute festivals a couple of weeks ago and all of my students received Superior ratings (again)!! Woohoo!! Way to go everyone!! However, for me, the recognition of their hard work by receiving Superior ratings is not the end goal. I believe that what is more important is what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown this past semester. Festival is a way to help push flute students to polish songs and really focus on improving certain aspects of their playing. In fact, I had one student who ended up being sick and wasn’t able to participate in festival, but I rejoice in the progress she made in preparation for the event, even though she wasn’t able to participate.

And so in music, as well as in life, we should periodically pause to reflect on the progress we’ve made since the new year and pause to reflect on what steps we can now take to continue our improvement and progression. Choose one thing you can do to strengthen your skills as a flute player. And choose one thing you can do improve yourself as a person.

Festival Congratulations

Sending out huge congratulations to each of my students for performing last weekend at the Timpanogos Area Flute Federation Festival under the direction of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Each student had to perform two songs; one of which had to be memorized. All of my students received Superior ratings!! Way to go everyone, you did it!

This year two of my students earned their 15 point gold cup and one student earned a 30 point gold cup. Hooray! That takes 3 years and 6 years respectively of Superior ratings. Congratulations! That’s a lot of flute practicing.

It’s great to work really hard toward a performance and to have your efforts pay off in the moment when it counts. As a teacher, it’s rewarding to see each of my flute students progress and grow in their flute development on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. I’m proud of you for taking advantage of another performing opportunity to learn and grow. Keep up the good work everyone.

Bravo!!

Congratulations May 2023

Congratulations to my graduating senior flute student this year who was accepted into the Brigham Young University music program! That is a tremendous accomplishment!!

Congratulations also goes out to two of my students for earning gold cups from the National Federation of Music Clubs. One student earned a 15 point gold cup in the flute solo event and the other student earned a 30 point gold cup for the combined flute/concerto event. That represents years of hard work and memorizing music. Way to go!

Hard Work Rewarded

Gold Cups from the National Federation of Music Clubs

Last weekend we had our Federation Festival for the Timpanogos Area Flute Chapter. Congratulations to two of my students for earning a 15 point Gold Cup and a 30 point Gold Cup from the National Federation of Music Clubs!! That takes at least 3-6 years to earn. They’ve both worked hard to earn these. They’ll get their name engraved on the front of the base. Way to go!!

Frequently our hard work goes unnoticed. However, please remember that it is still valued, even if there is no immediate reward.

It is nice for these students to be recognized for all their time practicing and preparing for festivals for so many years.

Congratulations!!
